Software Tool for the Analysis of the Coagulation Zone from Multipolar Radiofrequency Ablation

چکیده
Percutaneous radiofrequency (RF) ablation is becoming a standard minimal invasive procedure for treatment of primary liver tumors. In clinical practice, knowledge about geometry and expected size of the coagulation is essential to prevent local tumor recurrence. Particularly the heat-sink effects of large vessels in the vicinity of the electrode may lead to a smaller size of the coagulation zone. For the evaluation of multipolar RF ablation studies with ex-vivo porcine livers, a novel software tool is presented. The tool supports manual contouring of the coagulation in digital photographs from liver slices. Based on geometric measurements of the RF applicators, deformations of the liver specimens are compensated. Furthermore, the software tool supports automated quantification of a large number of experiments.

Multipolar radiofrequency ablation with internally cooled electrodes: experimental study in ex vivo bovine liver with mathematic modeling.
PURPOSE To evaluate the size and geometry of thermally induced coagulation by using multipolar radiofrequency (RF) ablation and to determine a mathematic model to predict coagulation volume. MATERIALS AND METHODS Multipolar RF ablations (n = 80) were performed in ex vivo bovine livers by using three internally cooled bipolar applicators with two electrodes on the same shaft. Applicators were ...
متن کاملPerfused hypertonic-saline-augmented needle enlarges ablation zones in ex vivo porcine livers
There is a great clinical requirement to improve radiofrequency ablation (RFA) efficacy and create larger coagulation necrotic areas. The aim of the present study was to assess the ability of a hypertonic-saline (HS)-enhanced multipolar RFA technique using a perfused electrode to increase RF-created coagulation necrosis, and to compare that technique with natural saline-augmented needle and con...

Introduction: Diagnosis of primary and secondary cancers to treat patients with diffuse and malignant tumors is an important subject. The appropriate treatment will be eliminating primary and metastatic tumors. Radiofrequency ablation with localized heat induction in the target tissue causes irreversible cellular damage and tissue coagulation. Estimation of tissue temperature c...
متن کاملMultipolar radiofrequency ablation of large hepatic metastases of endocrine tumours.
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a reliable method of creating thermally induced coagulation necrosis. Local recurrence after RFA of hepatic metastases is directly dependent on tumour size related to the free margin of ablation. To produce larger coagulation volumes a bipolar radiofrequency device was developed that allows the simultaneous activation of three active needles. This technique was ...

PURPOSE To evaluate the clinical feasibility and safety of hepatic radiofrequency (RF) ablation using a multipolar RF system permitting the simultaneous use of up to six electrodes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten patients (3 female, 7 male, mean age 61) suffering from 29 hepatic metastases (range: 1 - 5) of different tumors were treated with a modified multipolar RF system (CelonLab Power, Celon M...
